This piece is near and dear to my heart as a former TeamMates youth mentor. While on Nelnet’s TeamMates steering committee, I got the chance to promote the nonprofit to associates in the Lincoln community.
Client: TeamMates was founded by former University of Nebraska – Lincoln football coach Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy. The organization provides mentors to more than 7,500 youth in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Wyoming. Nelnet partners with TeamMates to recruit associates as youth mentors; the mentor pool at Nelnet’s Lincoln location had been around 20 for several years, or 1% of associates.
Role: Steering committee member, account executive, and copywriter. Creative concept mine.
Strategy: We wanted a playful visual representation of the TeamMates mentor/mentee relationship. By showing that losing a game can actually be winning at the mentoring partnership, we illustrated how easily associates could invest in local youth. Copy was direct, laying out expectations and how to make mentoring fit into volunteers’ work schedule.
Delivery: A trifold brochure / desk drop was delivered standing upright to each Lincoln associate’s desk by steering committee volunteers. Posters were hung in breakrooms, lobbies, and elevators.
Outcomes: Nelnet’s TeamMates volunteer pool grew by 50%! We received many stories of how associates had been thinking about signing up to mentor, but just needed this little push to make the move.
